Watching over the National Maritime Museum
National Museums at Chatham is a heritage project of national significance, developed in partnership with the National Maritime Museum and the Imperial War Museum to create a new centre for world-class collections at the heart of the historic Dockyard. This unique collection calls for a fire protection system of the highest integrity, configured to protect all areas of the building and to monitor the peripheral specialist detection systems in the five repositories, which store the priceless exhibits and collection of over 4,000 ships' models.
Freedor swings into action
According to Fireco, its Freedor is the new, ergonomic solution for holding fire doors open safely and legally while enabling improved access. It is a wireless device that is installed at the top of a fire door, allowing the door to swing freely, to be left in any position, but closing the door when the fire alarm sounds. It listens for a fire alarm that exceeds 65dBA, verifying the alarm over a 14 second period, before releasing the fire door to prevent the spread of fire and smoke around the building.
The power to save PC power
Windows 7 helps to reduce energy consumption by PCs by deploying screen saving and turning off some of the services in sleep mode. While all means of saving energy are important, the energy saved represents a mere fraction of the potential that can be achieved.
Flying start for new qualifications
The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) has revealed that over 200 learners are now registered for its new facilities management qualifications and that the first awards have already been made. Since they were launched in March 2010, the BIFM’s FM qualifications, at levels 4, 5 and 6 in the UK’s Qualifications and Credit Framework, have been well-received according to the Institute.
New on-line management system
Facilities management provider SGP Property & Facilities Management has announced the launch of its on-line technology solution for managing clients’ service charge exposure. According to the company, the system is the latest in a long line of process improvement tools that have been developed in collaboration with its clients, including the maintenance management system www.fixmypub.com and a supplier accreditation system. The SGP team manages over £100m of service charge on behalf of clients.
